Manchester United Set to Secure German Forward Lea Schüller from Bayern Munich
The Women's Super League club are on the verge of completing the signing for prolific Germany forward Lea Schüller on a permanent transfer away from the Frauen-Bundesliga champions.
A Major Acquisition for the WSL Side
Schüller, who has half a year remaining on her contract, is known as a prolific goal-getter for her club and the national team. Having netted over 100 goals for the German giants and found the net 54 times in 82 caps for her country. This signing is viewed as a marquee signing for the Women’s Super League team.
Departure from Bayern has been anticipated since she appeared to be fighting back tears while applauding the club's supporters following a win over Bayer Leverkusen this month.
It was reported in late December that the Frauen-Bundesliga was losing one of its leading forwards. According to multiple sources, all the paperwork for the transfer have now been completed.
Consistent Goalscoring to Strengthen the Forward Line
The experienced striker's arrival should represent a significant uplift to United’s forward line. She has been highly reliable with her finishing in Germany’s top flight.
- For seven consecutive seasons, up to and including the last term, she reached at least a double-figures tally of league goals.
- She claimed the top scorer award in the 2021-22 season with 16 goals.
Gathering Steam at Old Trafford
The acquisition of Schüller’s signature coincides with a period when United seem to be building positive momentum.
Their recent performances feature securing a place in the European knockout phase playoffs as a seeded team and a victory in the League Cup quarter-finals.
Off the pitch, the mid-season window has seen additional activity:
- The acquisition of Swedish defender Hanna Lundkvist on a multi-year deal.
- The contract extension for Japanese midfielder Hinata Miyazawa, who has become popular figure since joining in 2023.
On the midfielder's new deal, a senior figure stated: “She has become a vital component to the way we play. Her footballing intelligence and technical ability allows her and the team to dominate play from central areas.”
Lundkvist, who has arrived from a club in the American league, added: “You can sense how much they [United] have grown in the last few years, competing in one of the strongest leagues in the world and performing in the Champions League.”
