A Story of Unexpected Kindness: The Time a Student Allowed Me to Sleep on Her Dorm Ground
Back in the year 2006, My journey took me to the Australian capital for a medical school interview. I assumed to book a place to stay after getting there, however upon reaching the city, a big convention was happening and all the youth hostels and affordable lodging had no vacancies.
As a visitor from Singapore, I considered maybe I could just sleep at the airport – but soon learned the local airport, not like the one back home, does not operate around the clock. Unsure of how to proceed and growing worried, I boarded public transport and found myself drifting in the direction of a gaming venue, reasoning I could pass those hours somewhere operating 24/7. This was not ideal in the best shape to succeed at an interview the following day, yet, as a broke student, luxury accommodation was impossible.
The world needs more folks who show such kindness.
Apparently, I appeared lost as a woman saw me walking aimlessly through the city center and asked if I was OK. I recounted my situation and without hesitation she said I could crash on a spare mattress in her student dorm at ANU – a perfect solution, given that my the important interview was the following day. She went further by offering a meal: one filled rolls she brought back her evening job. I had access to a hot shower and a protected spot and secure to spend the night.
In retrospect, I can appreciate the enormous leap of faith she took as a young woman allowing a guy she had only just encountered crash at her place. At that time I was in my own unawareness and was oblivious to such safety concerns. Now, as a father, I’m amazed she took that chance – yet incredibly thankful.
I didn’t end up go to the Australian National University, and I never saw her again, but I’ve never forgotten her amazing act of human compassion. It is my wish karma has rewarded her generosity abundantly. We could all use more individuals with such compassion.
