Antony Price, Famed for Designing for David Bowie and Duran Duran, Passes Away at Age 80.
The British designer Antony Price, the influential style architect behind many legendary styles favored by musical icons like Bowie and members of Roxy Music, as well as Queen Camilla, has sadly died at 80 years old.
Price was best known for his architectural shapes and performative fashion, including the soft-colored suits that featured in the iconic band Duran Duran's landmark music video for "Rio".
"Remembering him as a 'visionary' and a 'kind, intelligent and razor-witted friend,' the band released a statement across their platforms."
Price's death comes less than a month after he debuted his latest collection in London, which was his first major show in over 30 years. Artist Lily Allen showcased a dress evoking the notorious black velvet "dress" made famous by Diana, Princess of Wales.
An Enduring Influence
Hailing from Yorkshire, where he was born in 1945, Price moved to London in the early 1960s to study at the esteemed Royal College of Art.
Shortly after his graduation, he commenced his career designing men's fashion at the company Stirling Copper and was behind the tight, button-detailed trousers that rock legend Mick Jagger sported during The Rolling Stones' "Gimme Shelter" tour in the late sixties.
He founded his own label in 1979 and staged his first fashion show a year later. The show featured as its opener looks from model Jerry Hall, who later wore the wedding dress Price specifically designed for her wedding to Sir Mick Jagger.
Collaborations with Icons
A key creative partner of David Bowie, Price designed the iconic jacket the artist wore for his "the song As The World Falls Down" music video in 1986.
His signature ability to fuse tailoring for all genders along with his masterful technique in designing body-hugging looks established him as a "true original," as stated by the UK's fashion authority.
By the 1990s, he started creating ensembles for the then-Duchess of Cornwall, Camilla, such as a number of outfits for her US tour after becoming Duchess.
With a vocation that covered half a century, Price held his ultimate fashion presentation in London recently in partnership with the fashion brand 16Arlington.
