Arne Slot Asserts He Is Safe and Has The Club's Backing After PSV Defeat
Arne Slot acknowledged that it's understandable for questions to be asked about his position following a further heavy loss versus the Dutch champions.
The Reds endured their ninth loss in 12 matches, representing the team's poorest streak since being relegated in the 1953-54 season.
They were outplayed by the Dutch league champions on a difficult evening at their home ground.
“I feel secure, I am OK, I have got significant backing from above,” Slot remarked.
“It's important to change things and secure a win naturally but when you're working as a coach and underperforming then it's expected that people question you.”
He added, “I accept my situation. This isn't the first time I’ve been in a difficult position but it's necessary that we turned it around.”
Discussions with The Board
When asked to expand on his conversations with the Liverpool hierarchy, Slot explained:
“There's regular dialogue. They are helpful to the team and to me and we discuss these matters but they aren't calling me constantly each day to say they back me.”
He mentioned, “Through standard discussions I perceive the trust. However I haven’t spoken to them after this game so far so we'll see.”
Persistent Failings and Squad Response
Slot expressed regret over known failings from his team in their European defeat, namely poor finishing and leaking goals.
Meanwhile, player Curtis Jones was more forthright in his view of the team's situation.
“I haven't got the solutions. Truthfully, I don’t. I'm telling that to everyone,” the midfielder stated.
“It's simply unacceptable. I don’t even need to wait to reflect. I’m past getting mad internally. I've reached the stage currently where I just don’t have the vocabulary.”
He added, “It’s hard because I’m playing for the team I support. I'm a supporter, and I’ve seen this club for years.”
“In recent memory, I haven’t experienced a Reds side experiencing a period like this with performances this poor.”
He concluded, “But we still have the emblem on our chest. And until that badge is gone, we’re always going to battle.”
“Our aim is to help the side back to where it needs to be, demonstrate to all again the values of this club and the reason it's called the best team in the world.”
“At this moment, things are bad and it needs to change.”
