The former Liverpool manager says a return to coach Liverpool is plausible in theory.
The German coach, who stepped down from Anfield in 2024, indicated that rejoining the club remains a possibility. The 58-year-old, after a transformative near-decade reign which brought Champions League success and ending the club's long wait since 1990, now holds roles in a global football capacity within the Red Bull organization and providing guidance with the German Football League.
Supporters’ Hopes and His Frank Comments
The club claimed the Premier League under Arne Slot, though countless followers who adore the manager would welcome the possibility that he might come back one day. Speaking candidly, he told his interviewer: “I declared I refuse to lead a different club within the country. Therefore if then it’s Liverpool...yeah. It's plausible.”
“Being 58, that means I might decide down the line, it's uncertain. Is a decision required immediately? Then I will not coach again. Fortunately, no such pressure exists. I'll wait and observe how things unfold.”
Conditions for a Comeback
Pressed on which situations would have to unfold to draw him back to management, he revealed he feels no immediate pull toward coming back. “I don’t even know exactly, I enjoy my current role,” he commented. “I don't crave being a coach; I don’t miss standing under bad weather for lengthy sessions; I'm glad to skip media briefings multiple times weekly or having 10-12 interviews a week.
“I don’t miss the dressing room per se, but sitting in a restaurant alongside the squad having a nice chat, that’s nice. With many victories so there was often a very good mood around the place. I can still hear the captain's chuckle vividly recalled as an instance.”
Commending Arne Slot
He spoke highly of the current boss, acknowledging his role for the adjustments that won the league last campaign. The team has suffered four consecutive matches in every contest post heavy investment, but he rubbished the notion that it might signal the start of a downward turn.
“[Liverpool have] an incredible striker such as Wirtz, doubters will be silenced with negative comments. He’s an incredible talent. [Hugo] Ekitike, superb talent. This is a well-built thoughtfully assembled roster. No need for concern over the club, they will be fine.”
Emotional Tribute for the Late Forward
He shared movingly on the loss of the Portuguese star, whom he brought in in 2020, and the effect on Liverpool. Jota lost his life in a vehicle collision with his brother in July.
“How do you replace somebody like Diogo? This isn't just regarding his footballing ability, his personality mattered. I can’t imagine the team environment absent his presence. I find it difficult to discuss regarding this. It was an incredible shock for the entire squad too. No one within the club might employ it for poor performances but it is the situation. Being in that space which he filled completely. Handling this individually is challenging. Impossible.”
