The Mighty Nein's Introductory Sequence Chose the Incorrect Critical Role Song
This latest animated series, the most recent animated adventure by Critical Role, revealed a new introductory sequence. It features our favorite group of outcasts, outcasts, and criminals kicking ass and making their mark, while also hinting at multiple agonizing personal histories for characters including the voice actor's wizard Caleb, and another actor's orc warlock, the character Fjord.
All in all, the intro appears amazing. However, I felt that an element was lost in the music selection.
This sequence employs "Welcome to the Continent", a truly stellar song created by producer and singer the talented musician. This piece originating from the soundtrack album of that title, the second one released by the production company's record label Scanlan Shorthalt Music. It's a wonderful sentimental option, and I believe that devotees of the second campaign will appreciate its inclusion.
Personally, The Mighty Nein's opening fails to capture the hype and excitement that accompanied the second campaign's actual-play adventure. "Your Turn to Roll", written by musician Jason Charles Miller, became an immediate hit for me when it was initially unveiled in 2015, and it only got better when cast member Sam Riegel wrote words to the melody for the animated Campaign 2 opening in the later year.
Including singing from one actress, Laura Bailey, a co-star, as well as Riegel himself, the track was catchy and enjoyable. Back then, I hadn't seen the follow-up series at that point, but it was so infectious that I still saved it on my phone. It's a song that knows how to get you pumped before you dive into an episode of adventurous fun.
The Mighty Nein's intro with "the new song" fails to hit the same chords for me. It's an impressive piece of music, but based on my understanding of this party, I feel that its mood is a little off.
Naturally, the creators has already said that the series will have some surprises and variations from the actual-play campaign. A tonal change for its intro seems to be one of them.
This animated adventure will be available to watch on Prime Video from November 19. For those eager before that, or want a head start to learn about the personas of the second series, the actual play are available on the audio platform and the video site.
