The people of Israel mark two-year remembrance of October 7th incident as Gaza peace talks advance
Citizens have come together throughout the country to remember two years since the Hamas-conducted attack on 7 October 2023, as negotiations proceeded in the neighboring country over an end to the conflict in Gaza.
The attack saw more than 1,200 people killed and 251 others taken back to Gaza as hostages. It was the uniquely most fatal day for Jews since the Holocaust.
Israel responded by initiating a armed campaign in Gaza which has killed over 67,000 people, based on figures from the region's Hamas-controlled health ministry. Its statistics are regarded as reliable by the United Nations and other international bodies.
"The bloodthirsty opponents have hit us hard, but they have not defeated us," the prime minister remarked on that day.
He also promised to "achieve all the goals of the war: the homecoming of all the abducted, the removal of the Hamas administration and the promise that Gaza will no longer create a threat to Israel".
Memorial Ceremonies Across Israel
The government authorities postponed formal commemorations until October 16th - after the end of the Jewish High Holiday season - but gatherings still were held throughout the country on that day.
A remembrance service for the relatives of Israelis killed in the Hamas assault was conducted in Tel Aviv. Organized by the affected families, it was televised on Israeli TV networks.
Some time earlier, a silent tribute was held throughout the country.
Ceasefire Meetings in Egypt
Simultaneously, the conflicting parties' representatives gathered in the Egyptian Red Sea resort of the Egyptian city for a continuing round of mediated discussions to review the provisions of the plan.
A high-ranking Palestinian official involved in the talks indicated that an late session of negotiations started at 7 PM local time.
The source explained the day's discussions finished without concrete outcomes, because of disagreements over the recommended Israeli retreat arrangements from Gaza and over guarantees Hamas wants to guarantee Israel does not recommence fighting after the first phase of the agreement.
He added that the talks are "tough and have not yet produce any major advancement," but pointed out that intermediaries are making efforts to close the disparities between the two sides.
Key Points in Discussions
- A permanent truce
- The exchange of the prisoners still held by Hamas for inmates from Gaza
- The removal of troops from Gaza
- Measures for relief supplies provision
- After-conflict administration of the region
Public Feeling
In the city's public square earlier, young a woman - whose family member endured the assault on the Nova music festival, where many attendees were killed and numerous more were taken hostage by Hamas gunmen - explained: "No place appears as home any longer and until each abducted person are released not a single person will have peace of mind."
"When we see all home returned, we can relax once more. Then we can start to heal," she added.
Outside the prime minister's residence in Jerusalem, people assembled to demonstrate their solidarity for the relatives of the abducted. Israel says 48 remain in confinement in Gaza, 20 of whom are considered to be alive.
Activist one woman explained: "We must do every compromise required for the captives to come back home. But we truly desire promises that we will be protected."
Opinion polls now regularly indicate that approximately 70% of Israelis prefer the war to end in exchange for the release of the abducted.
Gaza Conditions
At the location of the music event, mourners gathered to honor the dead.
From that location, the noise of aerial bombardments and explosions could be noticed just a few kilometres away in Gaza, where witnesses said the intense Israeli bombardment continued.
In the urban center, attacks were noted in the morning of that day in the western district, Rimal and Nasr neighbourhoods and in the eastern area of Sheikh Radwan, as well the camp to the northwestern area.
"When the night comes, the dread arrives with it," relocated Gaza City resident Emaan al-Wahidi, whose 17-year-old son was lost his life by an Israeli air strike earlier, explained.
"Me and my three children are fearful of the bombings. Throughout the evening we are lying together, holding each other, particularly my smallest child who rests his face on me all night."
"Every second we monitor the updates to see the situation. And I'm concerned that this truce will not be achieved and that the war will resume to us."
Health Situation
The healthcare center in the urban area announced it had received the bodies of six people by the midday, including a trio who lost their lives in an Israeli strike in the southern district.
A different healthcare center in the southern urban center of the city indicated another two fatalities had been delivered. A person was killed by Israeli soldiers while looking for assistance to the southern area, medics said.
