The Showrunner Shares He Has an Idea of How The Apple TV+ Show Might Finish... For Now.
The creative mastermind never anticipated that his new science-fiction series would turn into a massive hit. “I am so grateful to the audience,” he states. “I did not foresee the show being as passionately debated as it is, and it makes me thrilled beyond words.”
As the debut season of the hit series wrapping up—and the next chapter already in development—the writers' room reflected on the audience reaction and whether it will shape the storyline of Pluribus.
On the Tremendous Viewer Reception
It would be easy to get sidetracked by the constant speculation and audience predictions surrounding Pluribus. The creator is striving to avoid both.
“It feels like constantly eating something incredibly sweet and being laughing uncontrollably,” he explains. “It's the greatest thing, but I hear about it through word of mouth, and that's intentional. Never in my life Googled myself, nor do I ever plan to. Not because I don't care. It's a deep trap I know I would fall into and then I'd be living in squalor from Home Depot and I'd never leave my living room.”
Despite his concerted efforts, there’s it's impossible to ignore the extremely enthusiastic response to the series. The only approach for the writers is to accept it graciously and try not to let it influence the direction of the show.
“We don't try to change the plot,” says co-executive producer Alison Tatlock. “The plot we develop is not changed by online forums.”
“It's wiser to keep our focus on the work,” he chimes in.
A Pressing Query: Does Vince Gilligan Have a Plan for the Finale of Pluribus?
Given that the creative staff aren’t being guided by fan response, can we assume they have already decided how Pluribus will reach its endpoint? In short yes… in a way.
“There are some interesting ideas about how the story could conclude,” Gilligan says. “yet we stand ready to abandon a good idea for a superior concept. This approach has served us in good stead on Better Call Saul and on Breaking Bad even before that. We change course when we find a more perfect path and I imagine we will be doing that.”
On the other hand, if all else fails, executive producer Gordon Smith has a pretty funny idea to fall back on.
“My recurring proposal is that it's all in a snow globe, and that we'll reveal the snow globe and we're in there,” he says humorously, “but no one is buying it.”
Then again, why not reference the iconic TV endings?
“I want Carol to wake up in bed beside Bob Newhart,” Gilligan adds, smiling.
Pluribus can be watched on Apple TV.
